Mapping of the human brain function in vivo is among the most promising means of uncovering the relationship between brain and behavior. Both the 1000 Functional Connectome Project and Human Connectome Project have made advancements in the collection, management, and sharing of massive neuroimaging datasets. In China, the government plans to announce the China Brain Project (CBP), a national brain project aimed at understanding neural mechanisms underlying human cognition with applications of brain disease and brain-inspired computation. Methods for in vivo human brain mapping must be included in the CBP, as they make possible direct assessment of brain structure and activity and contribute directly to translational research. As a special topic on human brain mapping in vivo, this issue published a small set of studies performed by Chinese researchers, indicating the initial promise of multi-modal or multi-method integration for mapping brains of normal and clinical populations. It is the hope that these work will serve as the first flame of coming CBP fire on the human brain sciences (see the Special Topic: Mapping the Human Brain Function In Vivo on page 1839).
